Why AI can’t find most businesses

More people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews for recommendations before they ever open a search engine. But AI answer engines don’t read a website the way Google’s crawler does. They rely on machine-readable signals — structured data, clear answer content, and permission to crawl — to understand what a business is and whether to recommend it. Most sites give them almost none of that, so the AI simply can’t identify or quote them, and recommends a competitor instead.

Readable vs. recommendable — two different jobs

Getting recommended by AI is really two problems. On-site signals — schema.org structured data, FAQ and answer content, an llms.txt file, and allowing AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot — make your business readable: they let AI understand and quote you accurately. Off-site signals — your Google Business Profile, review count and rating, and consistent name/address/phone (NAP) across Maps, Yelp, and directories — make you recommendable. For local searches especially, the AI assembles its answer from that local graph, so a shop with a perfectly optimized homepage can still lose to a competitor with more consistent reviews. You need both. Findlux focuses on the on-site layer — the emerging GEO signals most SEO toolkits don’t cover yet — which complements the reviews and citations work.

What Findlux checks

Findlux scans your website and scores your AI-readiness across four dimensions: discoverability (can AI find and identify your business), accuracy (would AI describe you correctly), structured data (do you have the schema.org markup AI relies on), and answer content (is there FAQ-style content AI can quote). It then generates the exact fixes — paste-ready schema.org markup, an llms.txt file, and answer-optimized FAQ content — so you don’t have to guess.

How to get cited by AI search engines

  • • Add schema.org structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQ) so AI can reliably identify you.
  • • Publish answer-optimized content — clear, question-and-answer sections AI can quote directly.
  • • Add an llms.txt file — the emerging “instructions for AI” standard.
  • Allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) in your robots.txt.
  • • Keep your NAP consistent and grow reviews across Google and directories for local recommendability.

Frequently asked questions

What is Findlux?

Findlux is an AI-search visibility (GEO) tool. It audits how AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews see your website, scores your AI-readiness, and gives you the exact fixes to get found, quoted, and recommended by AI.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of optimizing your website to be found, understood, quoted, and recommended by AI answer engines — the same way SEO optimizes for Google search. It relies on structured data, clear answer content, and letting AI crawlers read your site.

Why doesn’t my business show up in ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Usually because your site is missing structured data (schema.org), has no FAQ or answer content for AI to quote, lacks an llms.txt file, or blocks AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot in robots.txt. AI engines then can’t reliably identify or cite your business. Findlux scores each of these and shows you exactly what to fix.

How do I get my business recommended by AI search engines?

Add schema.org structured data so AI can identify your business, publish answer-optimized FAQ content AI can quote, add an llms.txt file, and make sure AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) are allowed in robots.txt. Findlux generates the schema, llms.txt, and FAQ for you.

Is the Findlux AI-visibility audit free?

Yes. You can run a free AI-visibility scan that gives you an AI-readiness score and your top gaps in seconds. The Pro plan unlocks the full prioritized fix list, auto-generated schema.org, llms.txt and FAQ content, and monthly re-scans.

What is an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is an emerging standard — think of it as a robots.txt for AI — that tells AI models what your site is about and how to represent your business accurately. Findlux checks whether you have one and generates it for you.

How does the Findlux audit work?

Findlux crawls your website and checks for the specific signals AI answer engines use to find, understand, and cite a business — structured data (schema.org), FAQ and answer content, an llms.txt file, whether AI crawlers are allowed, and content depth. It scores each signal, then generates the paste-ready fixes for whatever is missing.

How is the AI-readiness score calculated?

Your AI-readiness score is a 0–100 measure across four dimensions: discoverability (can AI find and identify your business), accuracy (would AI describe you correctly), structured data (do you have the schema AI relies on), and answer content (is there content AI can quote). Each dimension is weighted by how much it affects whether AI can actually recommend you.

How is Findlux different from traditional SEO tools?

Traditional SEO tools optimize for Google’s ranking algorithm — keywords, backlinks, and rankings. Findlux optimizes for AI answer engines (this is called GEO, Generative Engine Optimization): ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews pick businesses differently, using structured data and quotable content rather than links. Findlux complements your existing SEO and local citation work rather than replacing it.
